One of my friends bought a Dell Laptop in Bangalore last year. He was pretty happy with the initial performance. By initial duration, I mean just the initial 15 days. After that strange problems started happening in his laptop. First let me tell you the configuration of his laptop. It was a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, with 3 GB ram and 250 GB hard disk. The processor was Intel Core to Duo. I think he had taken the best configuration available at that time.
Now back to problems, the laptop was getting bloody so hot that it was impossible to work on it by keeping it on your lap. It would literally burn your legs out. And you could not watch a movie on it, since it automatically shut down in about 1 hour time. There were many situations where he was doing some important activities like booking ticket or writing email and suddenly the lap top shut down causing loss of data.
Frustated with the behavior of his brand new laptop, he called the Dell Customer Care, fortunately they were helpful. They told him to install some software that would increase the fan speed of his laptop. That worked, finally he was able to use his laptop for longer durations and it stopped shutting down. But the heating problem was still there. I wonder if he could also use his laptop for making egg omelette’s by keeping it upside down.
But to his dismay, this problem again appeared after five months. Again he called the Dell customer care, they came, they cleaned the laptop and they went. The laptop ran smoothly for one month and then again reappeared. He told me that now he was so fed up with his laptop that he was only using it in case of an emergency ( like some urgent email, or ticket booking)
Finally he went to the dell service centre ( after the laptop warranty was over ), and then he came to know from the so called Dell Engineers that the motherboard was faulty from starting itself and that has caused further damage to the laptop. Total cost of repairs INR 14000 ( equivalent to USD$350). He was shattered, disappointed and disgusted and termed this laptop as the worst purchase that he had made throughout his life.
One thing that I would love to ask you guys ( my blog readers) that is the Dell Laptops in India only who are facing such issues, or are these issues common worldwide. Because if former is true I can say that these Dell studs are using some cheap parts from China and Taiwan to make these laptops and supply to Indian market.
